It's been a while since I have adopted a tethered shooting workflow into my life. I haven't written about that particular aspect of our work since I wanted to offer more information about how we got to our ideas, how we shot them, etc.
Let me just say tethered shooting has been one of the best things I've picked up ever since I got my Fujifilm X-T2. Being able to see images on a larger screen has been such a help for us to review lighting and posing which makes for a lot less work in post. Still have yet to try this in an outdoor setting for various reasons but it has been amazing for studio work.
One thing I had really been hoping for was direct Fuji support in Capture One primarily with tethering. To me 'app stacking' is not my preferred method of doing things since I had to use Fuji's X-Acquire software to pull the images off the camera and then use Capture One's Hot Folder option to show the images. It works... I just really like one application solutions where possible. Since I had heard nothing about Fuji support since I started using Capture One I actually had tweeted at Fuji, Phase One, and Tether Tools about support.
The next day at Photokina they announced direct support in Capture One. Amazingly good timing there.
My X-T2 had been out for repair due to a shutter issue so I didn't have a chance to test out the updated version of Capture One. Once I got it back that was the first thing I did. With the added direct control and a USB3 cable from TetherTools I was hoping for a bit more speed when pulling over JPGs... with a hope of possibly even pulling over RAWs if it was fast enough.
It was actually a bit slower.
The rest of my setup hasn't changed. Using a Dell Inspiron 7373 (i5-8250u processor, 8GB RAM) and utilizing a combination of Fuji's X-Acquire and previous versions of Capture One would get an image on the screen within five seconds. Which I was happy with especially when other pieces of software were much slower about returning images.
Direct tethering to Capture One typically was delivering images in seven to eight seconds. Which I was really surprised by.
One other bit I was surprised by was the CPU usage. With direct control there was always a constant 15-20% CPU usage from Capture One even when doing nothing. When taking photos it would sometime spike as high as 90%. By comparison using a combination of X-Acquire and Capture One may send the CPU to 40% at most with it going to 0% when idle.
I'd be curious to see if any of this would change if the system I was using had dedicated graphics that could utilized with OpenCL acceleration. I know an extra two to three seconds seems a bit like yelling at the microwave to hurry up. But when you shoot as many frames as I do those seconds do add up. I'm also curious if anything would change when using the newer X-H1 or X-T3 cameras.
I haven't had a chance to really try out all the direct control options Capture One now has. To be honest with my shooting style I'm at a loss on how I could utilize those at the moment. Part of the reason why I love the X-T2 is because the ergonomics allow me to change settings without really thinking about it. But I also understand my use case is certainly not the majority when it comes to reasons for tethering.
I'm happy that Fuji was finally able to partner with Phase One for this support. And I'm pretty sure a lot of other Fuji owners are as well.
Now if they could just work with Tether Tools for that Case Air support I've been wanting.
